Mahlab is also known as Mahleb or Mehlepi. A Middle Eastern spice popularly used in baking and cooking, similar to the use of vanilla as a flavouring here. It has an almondy cherry like flavour and is made from the seed of a sour type of cherry named St Lucies. Even added to rice as a flavouring.
